This month we would like to highlight Becky Kanoza (also known as Coach Steve's Better Half)! She has made a lot of gains in her training in the past few months, and during the Open she nailed both handstand push-ups AND chest to bar pull-ups! Plus she is just strong and awesome to boot! You can see her cranking away at metcons or lifting heavy weights in Strongman. We are pretty proud to have her as a member of our Purgatory family.
Where are you from? What brought you to Tucson?
I was born and raised in a suburb of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Steve and I were married in September of 1999, and left for Arizona three days later. Why? Well there's this thing called winter that we couldn't wait to escape. We picked Tucson for the mountains(we were just getting into rock climbing at the time), the sunny skies, and well the general lack of snow. Before moving to Tucson, I think I had spent a total of about 2 hours here. We knew almost nobody(Steve's great uncle and his family were here). It was a big leap for us, but there's not a single day we've regretted it.
How long have you been a CrossFitter, and why did you start?
I just celebrated my 3 year CrossFit anniversary. Steve had been doing CF for several years, and I thought he was crazy. I'd been doing yoga but slowly getting bored with it. It wasn't helping my neck problems so I started going to physical therapy. After a few sessions I realized they were just having me do strengthening exercises, so I thought, maybe I should finally give this Crossfit thing a try. I was extremely nervous and intimidated the first time I walked into the gym. I didn't really know anyone, and they spoke a language I didn't understand. But, I was welcomed with open arms. That's all it took. One session and I was hooked!!
Which movement is your favorite?
Ohhhhhhh...... that's a tough one. I love deadlifts, and bench press. I can't say one is better than the other.
How have you improved the most?
I've improved in so many ways, both physically and mentally. Since starting CF I have little to no neck pain. Previously it was a daily problem. My neck and shoulders are so much stronger than they've ever been. And mentally- I'm more positive, confident, and willing to try new things!
If you were stuck on a desert island, and could only have one food forever, what would it be?
Tacos. With lots of lettuce, because let's face it, I'll probably really want a taco salad. With lots of sour cream. And a Dove Dark Chocolate for dessert.
What do you love about being at CrossFit Purgatory?
The members! Everyone is so positive and supportive of each other!
What keeps you motivated?
The way it makes me feel. I feel better mentally, and physically when I work out.
If I'm not at the box, you can probably find me...
Running around town. Dropping kids off. Picking them up. Grocery shopping. Rock Climbing. At a restaurant. And occasionally relaxing at home. But, summer is coming, so I'll be relaxing poolside much more often very soon.
One interesting thing about yourself not related to CrossFit:
I collect Adenium plants, also known as Desert Rose. They are NOT native to AZ, or the US even. They are generally found in Africa, the Arabian peninsula, and Asia. I currently have more than 30 plants. They can't stay outside in the winter so a few years ago it got to the point that we have so many that we had to buy a greenhouse to put them all in because they started to take over the house. I love them for their crazy root base, and their pretty flowers, which vary by variety. And, I even have a tattoo of my favorite flower.
